As autumn approaches the staff at The Owl Foundation have been busy planning and organzing releases of our rehab and wild orphaned patients. In the last two weeks we have released 20 birds back to the wild. We would not be able to do this without our volunteer drivers and our donors. Thank you so much! The eagle family has been reunited. After healing from a fractured wing, this adult bald eagle was returned home. She flew directly to her nest and was quickly greeted by her two children, now teenagers...probably wondering where their parent had been all this time. | The Owl Foundation

As we reflect on this past year there has been some ups and downs. The most difficult one for The Owl Foundation was the loss of the Great Owl Lady, Kay McKeever. She was a pioneer in the field of wildlife rehabilitation, owl husbandry and breeding. With her husband Larry McKeever at her side they created a strong foundation to build on. As we move into 2020 we carry on their legacy in providing injured birds of prey the specialized care they require. We will continue to offer the help of our wi

The wild orphans admitted to The Owl Foundation have been through a lot in their young lives after being separated from their families. We strive to keep their stress to a minimum with resident foster parents. This Eastern Screech Owl fledging was reluctantly convinced to get on a branch for his weigh in so we didn't have to add stress by handling him. We can see his plumage is developing nicely. | The Owl Foundation

Back in the spring 3 boreal owls found themselves in trouble. Their nest tree had come down at Little Abitibi Lake Lodge (North end of Little Abitibi Lake Lodge). The camp manager put them in a box and called Chad Calaiezzi who then contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF). They were then transported by boat (approx. 17km) to the boat launch on the Little Abitibi River (at HWY 652) where he handed them over to a conservation officer with the MNRF. An owl's eye is a complex structure. Owl's have a third eyelid called a nictitating membrane that is a structure that helps protect the eye from damage. As you can see in this video the nictitating membrane did its job. We use flourscein stain to stain eyes, only the abrasions will glow under black light. As you can see the only area that is glowing is the nictitating membrane but the eye is not glowing which means there is no evidence of damage to the eye. With treatment of topical eye drops th

Today is a big day in sports but let us not forgot our superb-owl athletes who make their way through our centre to return to full fitness for a life back out in the wild! Here is a video of our soccer net victim, a Great Horned Owl (his story was originally posted on Dec 2, 2023). He suffered from deep rope burns with some causing large wounds. Recovered and reconditioned; he was recently released. GO TEAM WILD! | The Owl Foundation

Happy International Owl Awareness Day! This day celebrates owls and educates on how we can protect them. Little habit changes can make a big difference for our native owls. Avoiding rodenticides and rat poisons, protecting grassland habitats, and stopping roadside littering can all save owls. Please join us in celebrating our owl-standing educational ambassadors. These resident raptors inspire our community to join us in protecting our native owls and all birds of prey. To learn how to be an Owl

When Naschelly checked in on the young Eastern screech owl, the little patient quickly evaded her. The Registered Veterinary Technician saw this as a good sign that she was feeling much better. Just a week prior, the owl had struck a window, and the impact had left her too injured to fly. She managed to find safety behind a planter on Allison’s porch, where the caring homeowner found her and immediately sought help! Once at Toronto Wildlife Centre, Heather quietly examined the new patient as the

When asked "what noise does an owl make?" a very common answer is "twit twoo" 🦉 It is our native tawny owl that makes this well known call. However this noise is actually made by a female and a male calling to eachother, usually a breeding pair. The female makes a "ke-wick" sound and the male replies with "hoo-hoo-oo". Here is Pig our female tawny owl demonstrating her half of the famous duet. #tawnyowl #britishwildlife #eagleheightswildlifefoundation | Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation

Yesterday we challenged you to guess the mystery sound… Did you get it right? Meet Owlice, our female Great Horned Owl, in flight! Fun fact: Great Horned Owls are nearly silent fliers thanks to special fringed feathers that muffle the sound of air rushing over their wings, perfect for sneaking up on prey! You can meet Owlice in person when you visit AEF. Learn more at eagles.org/visit or check the tabs in our Linktree. | American Eagle Foundation

Did you know TWC’s Rehabilitation Team has a special technique for feeding baby owls? It’s called blind-feeding. This baby Eastern screech owl was placed into a box and hand-fed food using a pair of forceps. Feeders peek through a small hole so they know where to aim the morsels of meat. This simple method ensures that a highly impressionable little fluff like this one doesn’t learn to associate humans with food. After he was found alone in a backyard, with no parents or nest to be seen, this hu
