A prolific professor and leader in civil rights, Kellis Parker’s mentorship and influence extended far beyond the classroom. As the first black professor at Columbia Law School, Parker used his experience as a jazz trombonist to develop new methods for lawyering and advocacy. He believed that the structure of jazz, a musical conversation mediated by a soloist, was analogous to how policy and law were interpreted. In 1975, Parker published Modern Judicial Remedies: Cases and Materials, which brou
