Down the river 🚣 Within the constellation Eridanus (the River), the galaxy NGC 685 shines from 64 million light-years away. Its spiral arms are ablaze with young stars. NGC 685 is classified as a barred spiral because these arms sprout from the ends of a bar of stars at the galaxy’s center. Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is also a barred spiral, but it's a little less than twice the size of NGC 685.
