Skunks typically give a couple of warnings before they spray. A tail stuck straight up and fluffed out, followed by a stomp with the front legs is usually your first warning. If you don't heed those signals, they may turn around and and aim that rear end in the direction of the perceived threat. There's still time to back away - slowly and quietly!! Did you know? Even at a very young age, skunks will display defensive behaviors when threatened. This skunk is stomping, a stereotypical defense maneuver that warns predators and other animals that they're getting too close. They lift their tails in warning, and as a last resort will spray, even at this size (~400 grams).
