By Tim Kelly KANANASKIS, Alberta (Reuters) -Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to push ahead with trade talks on Monday, but failed to achieve a breakthrough that would lower or eliminate tariffs that threaten to hobble the Japanese economy.

KANANASKIS, Canada -- Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba met with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit here, seeking a reassessment of American tariffs on Japan and emphasizing a mutually beneficial relationship.

Ishiba traveled to the G7 summit in Canada hoping a direct appeal might get talks back on track after Japanese negotiators struggled to secure respite on a 25% tariff imposed on imported cars, according to two officials with knowledge of the matter.
