India's appointment of former central bank governor Shaktikanta Das as a key aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforces his focus on the country's economy at a time when it is facing domestic and external challenges.

Das will serve alongside the current Principal Secretary, Pramod Kumar Mishra, who has held the position since September 2019 and was reappointed in June 2024.

India on Saturday appointed its former central bank chief Shaktikanta Das as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's principal secretary, according to a government notice. The appointment comes after Das finished his second term at the helm of the Reserve Bank of India in December last year,

In his distinguished service of 44 years, Das held several key post during demonetisation and other challenging phases. As RBI Governor, he cut the policy repo rate to a historic low of 4 per cent, continuing with the low-interest rate regime for almost two years to help the economy hit badly by the Covid lockdown.
