Beyoncé kicked off her "Cowboy Carter" tour in Los Angeles, and it is a bold blend of country music, political symbolism and cultural reclamation.

The last time Beyoncé performed “Daddy Lessons,” the stomping, biting number from her 2016 album, “Lemonade,” was at that year’s C.M.A. Awards, in a blistering rendition alongside the Dixie Chicks (now the Chicks).

Beyoncé began her Cowboy Carter show with none other than her album opener, “AMERIICAN REQUIEM,” setting up her tour’s mission of claiming space in country music, and kicking off a politically minded act that also paired the U.S. National Anthem with her 2016 track “Freedom.”
