California has challenged the administration’s move to call up the National Guard over the objections of Governor Gavin Newsom.

Flare-ups continued across Los Angeles overnight following a day of mostly peaceful demonstrations over immigration enforcement that saw the Trump administration take the rare step of deploying active-duty Marines to the area.

Newsom filed a lawsuit Monday in response to Trump ordering the deployment of roughly 4,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles following protests over his stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws. They were originally called in to protect federal buildings, and the president later ordered the deployment of 700 Marines.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom had sued Trump in an attempt to block the deployment of federal troops in the city, which Newsom has called a “serious breach of state sovereignty.”

Protests in Los Angeles and San Francisco escalated after Trump deployed the National Guard without California’s approval. Demonstrators clashed with police, blocking freeways and setting cars ablaze amid heavy arrests.
