An unprecedented blackout brought much of Spain and Portugal to a standstill on Monday, stopping trains, cutting phone service and shutting down traffic lights and ATMs for millions of people across the Iberian Peninsula.

Officials in Spain and Portugal are racing to restore electricity after a huge power outage that grounded flights, paralyzed metro systems, disrupted mobile communications and shut down ATMs, upending the lives of tens of millions of people and turning airports and train stations into campgrounds for stranded travelers.

Spain has recovered more than 92% of its power following an unprecedented blackout that brought much of Spain and Portugal to a standstill, officials said.
