SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Actor Gene Hackman died of heart disease a full week after his wife died from hantavirus in their New Mexico home, likely unaware that she was dead because he was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, authorities revealed Friday.

Police say the circumstances around the deaths of Hackman, 95, Arakawa, 65, and their German shepherd in their New Mexico home were unusual, fuelling plenty of speculation online.

The exact details may never be known, but Mr. Hackman, 95 with advanced Alzheimer’s, was alone for about a week after his wife and sole caregiver died.

The two-time Oscar winner’s will reportedly does not name his three children, Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie.
