Rescuers were searching Thursday for 43 people missing in rough seas overnight after a ferry carrying 65 people sank near Indonesia’s resort island of Bali.

DENPASAR, Indonesia, July 3, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - At least four people were dead and dozens unaccounted for Thursday after a ferry sank on its way to the resort island of Bali, according to local authorities who said 23 survivors had been plucked from the water so far.

In March this year, a boat carrying 16 people capsized in rough seas off Bali, killing an Australian woman and injuring at least one other passenger. Back in 2022, a ferry with over 800 passengers ran aground in East Nusa Tenggara province and remained stranded for two days—fortunately, no injuries were reported.
