Over 7,000 runners from all 50 states and 12 countries are participating in the 26.2-mile Phoenix Marathon. The Dec. 13 event is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
At 71, the former race director averages about 30 miles a week, running every day, no matter the weather. "I'd say about anywhere between 25 and 40 miles a week is safe," he said. Most of the runs will be about three to five miles at any pace easy enough to carry on a conversation.
