New Jersey's gubernatorial election is heating up as Jack Ciattarelli faces Mikie Sherrill on November 4, with over a million votes already cast and tight polls keeping everyone on edge.

With voters turning out in record numbers for this year’s municipal elections, officials say results in New York City and New Jersey could come faster than usual — possibly within an hour after polls close Tuesday night.

The main candidates, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-New Jersey, and Republican Jack Ciattarelli have been almost neck-and-neck in polling this cycle. Most of these surveys have given Sherrill a slight advantage.

But the most telling results will come from gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, two states that voted similarly in 2024 but may now be drifting in opposite directions. The results there will offer clues about the political weather before the midterms in November 2026.
