Tsukuba, Japan—Tsunami earthquakes are characterized by the generation of disproportionately large tsunamis relative to the observed ground shaking, complicating timely evacuation efforts.
The epicentre of the earthquake was off the coast of Miyagi prefecture at a depth of 50km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
