The tomb of Pharaoh Thutmose II is the first royal crypt discovered in recent years, and scientists have new powerful tools to analyze it.

Key details meant scientists knew it was the Tomb of Thutmose II when his body had already been removed hundreds of years ago.

The archaeologist behind the discovery of an Ancient Egyptian tomb believes he may have found another tomb. Piers Litherland, the archaeologist who uncovered Pharaoh Thutmose II's tomb, says he may have found the location of a second tomb which dates back three-and-a-half thousand years.

But that doesn’t make the discovery of his final resting place any less important. On February 18, the Egyptian government announced that an international team of archeologists have finally confirmed the tomb’s location—making it the first and most significant royal find since the identification of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

The historically important reveal is said to mark the end of a search for the lost tombs of the kings of ancient Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty — which ran from approximately 1550 BC to 1292 BC. The finding comes more than one hundred years after King Tut’s remains were discovered in 1922, CBS News reported.

For the first time in over a century, a royal Egyptian tomb has been uncovered by archaeologists. The tomb was uncovered in 2022, but has only now been confirmed as the final resting place of King Thutmose II.

The ministry of antiquities said the discovery of the tomb of Thutmose II, whose wife, Hatshepsut, took the throne after his death, was the first excavation of a royal tomb near the Valley of the Kings since 1922.
