June 9, 11.30 p.m. EDT California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized the move to deploy Marines, saying the “The Secretary of Defense is illegally deploying them onto American streets so Trump can have a talking point at his parade this weekend.”

The lawsuit seeks to set aside the president’s order calling up troops in response to protests that spread over the weekend.

The move comes after 700 Marines were ordered to deploy to Los Angeles, where National Guard troops already are.
