D emocratic candidate and former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger made history Tuesday with her projected win in Virginia's governor race, besting current Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, and becoming the first woman elected to the position.

Democrat Abigail Spanberger, who the Associated Press has declared the winner of the Virginia governor’s race, is pulling in big numbers in the state’s most populated county.

Spanberger will succeed outgoing Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, who could not run for consecutive terms under state law.
