Republicans and some Democrats offered strong support for Israel’s move, but many Democrats called for de-escalation and warned of the consequences of a broader war.
A statement released by Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed no solidarity with Israel. The response may reflect a certain irritation with Netanyahu, who, by ordering the strikes, has undermined negotiations with Tehran that Trump relaunched in March.
Analysts believe that Iran may accelerate efforts to acquire a nuclear bomb as it faces a major Israeli assault.
The two sides were scheduled to meet for a sixth round of negotiations on Sunday. Oman, which was set to host the talks, said on Saturday that this round had been canceled.
The official tells Reuters that over 150 targets in Iran have been attacked. Most drones and missiles that have been launched towards Israel have been intercepted, the official says. Iranian state media has reported that 60 people, including 20 children, have been killed in an Israeli strike on Friday on a residential building in Tehran.
